The Black Wedding Dress was to reminder for the early pioneer brides that they were marrying into hardship, pioneering a new country, working on the land. The dress has a transformative quality as it symbolizes dark and light like night and day and death and life. In the same way that women’s roles have transformed to give them greater empowerment and identity, a process that is still ongoing.
